Label TextLondon’s John Gurd and Son manufactured the muzzleloading double-barrelled shotgun. Gunsmith John Gurd (1811-1883) came to London from Ireland in 1842. He followed the family line of work since both his father and grandfather had been gunsmiths. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, hunters used shotguns like this to kill birds and other wildlife. After the federal government signed the Migratory Birds Convention with the United States in 1916 and passed the Migratory Birds Convention Act in 1917, McIlwraith Ornithological Club members, including W.E. Saunders and, much later, Bill Girling, acted as wardens. They helped prosecute people who killed birds illegally.
