In 1878 Hubert Ashplant and Thomas Tanton open a boot and shoemaking business under the name Ashplant & Tanton on the south side of Dundas, two doors east of Market Lane. Ashplant carried on business alone after the death of Tanton in 1889. By 1892 Ashplant had opened a branch store in London East. In 1909, William J. Ashplant and Frank S. Ashplant, went into partnership with their father under the name of H. Ashplant & Sons, and the downtown store moved across the street to 146-148 Dundas. The downtown location closed in the late 1930's or early 1940's but a London East location continued until the late 1970's or early 1980's.
