Label TextThis pin is from the London Psychiatric Hospital, formerly known as the London Asylum for the Insane. It was established between 1869 and 1870 and located at 850 Highbury Avenue North. The grounds had four buildings including a chapel and a horse stable. Henry Landor (1870-1877) and Richard Maurice Bucke (1877-1902) lead initiatives for progressive treatments of mental illnesses, including occupational therapy, tending to the hospital grounds, and a focus on emotional and social interactions. After 144 years of treatments and property changes, the hospital ceased operations at the Highbury sites in 2014.
