Label TextDaniel Simmons Perrin (1833-1908) started a small confectionary and biscuit store on Horton Street in 1863, featuring handmade products such as stick candy, gingersnaps, and soda crackers. The D. S. Perrin Company thrived, eventually growing into both a national and international manufacturer of candy and biscuits which at its peak employed 500 people. It survived long after Perrin's death in 1908, eventually becoming the Canada Biscuit Company when it amalgamated with its local rival, the McCormick Company, in 1927. The underside of the lid of the Perrin’s Famous Biscuits box bears the stamp: “Somerville’s Lid-Tight Patented Feb. 1926.” Its top explains the benefits of the invention: “Notice This caddy will preserve the keeping qualities of the contents equally as well as tins if the cover is kept closed.” Less expensive to manufacture and ship than tin boxes and as effective, innovative packaging like this gave Somerville a competitive edge.
