Label TextEstablished in 1828 by John Balkwill, the London Brewery was housed in a log and plank building on Simcoe Street. The brewery produced over 400 barrels of beer a year. Businessman Samuel Eccles purchased it in 1847 and partnered with John Kinder Labatt, a brewmaster from England. Labatt became the sole owner in 1853, establishing John Labatt’s Brewery. This print was commissioned by John Burke Gaffney of Labatt in 1968 for a Christmas card, but not chosen. In 1978, 200 copies were made to celebrate the 150th anniversary. The print depicts Balkwill Brewery in the winter. A replica building was constructed in 1967 by Labatt Breweries of Canada to commemorate the country's centennial. The replica building now stands at Fanshawe Pioneer Village.
