Label TextThis firefighter's helmet is part of London's rich firefighting history. A volunteer fire department was formed in London in 1843, two years after its incorporation as a village. After a devastating fire in 1845 that destroyed over 150 buildings, water tanks were installed at intersections and a central fire bell was installed to alert citizens of fires. The city's first fire hall was opened on Carling Street in 1847, later moving to King Street. As the city grew, more stations were built and a permanent, paid firefighting force was established in 1871.
