Label TextLondon artist Bernice Vincent graduated from H.B. Beal Technical School in 1954 and went on to study, on scholarship, at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. She has exhibited her work in solo shows across southern Ontario including London’s Forest City Gallery, Embassy Cultural House, the McIntosh Gallery, and Museum London as well as the Art Gallery of Windsor, Gallery 1.1.1. (Winnipeg), A-Space in Toronto, and St. Lawrence College Art Gallery in Kingston, among others.
After painting a number of portraits of objects in her house, in 1974 Vincent created a series of small paintings of a section of the sky at different times during the day – a process that continues to define her way of working. By 1990 and 1991, Vincent’s work became more sculptural, moving her paintings “off the wall,” out into the exhibition space and increasingly on alternative supports, such as in “Passing Through the Landscape” (1991), which features a painted road that fits into the pedestal top and through a painted landscape on a cigar box top. “The View Ahead” (1990) features a painted road on board, which leans against the wall from the floor and connects to a painted landscape. This brooch harkens to this series of work.
