Label TextR. Hoe & Company was established by Peter Smith, Matthew Smith, and their brother-in-law, English emigrant Robert Hoe (1784–1833) in 1805. They were based in New York City. They were known for their wrought iron framed printing presses. The "Washington" model press was developed from designs by Samuel Rust in 1821, with R. Hoe & Company purchasing his patents for use in 1835.
