Object number2016.024.001
Label TextIn 1879, the Dominion Telegraph Company opened the first commercial telephone exchange in London. Service extended to St. Thomas in 1882, enabling instant “long distance” communication. The spread of the telephone, like the telegraph before it, led to new jobs. For many years, visitors to the Middlesex County Court House were alerted to the fact that they could find a public telephone down stairs. In this age of cell phones, the public telephone and sign were both removed.
