Label TextWilliam Melville Spencer was born to parents William and Jane Spencer in 1852. By the age of 28, he was a Director and elected first Secretary of the newly founded Imperial Oil Company, based in London, Ontario. He was also the first Vice President of the London Life Insurance Company. In addition, he was mayor of London in 1892. He was also superintendent of Metropolitan United Church and taught Sunday School. William Sr. (b. 1817, near Koblenz, Germany, d. 1902) was the first man to build and own an oil refinery in Canada. He was also a founder of Imperial Oil.
