Label TextSecond World War veteran George Dwyer (1908-2009) made these placemats at Parkwood in the context of Canadian Red Cross Veterans’ Crafts/Veterans Arts program. The Canadian Red Cross, in partnership with Veterans’ Affairs, launched the art therapy program for First and Second World War veterans in 1945. It operated out of veterans’ hospitals across Canada, including at London’s Parkwood. The Red Cross ran the program into the 1990s, at which time individual facilities ran their own programs. Parkwood staff member, Linda Kaiser, purchased the placemats at a residents’ craft show.
