The company manufactured machinery for printers including platen presses, paper cutters, book presses, and chases. This chase would have been used to hold type in a letterpress. The frame is filled with type and blocks of wood called furniture to fill the spaces without type. These pieces are held together by quoins. Chases that are filled and locked are called a forme and are ready to be used for printing.
