Label TextChandler & Price was founded in 1881, manufacturing printing machinery including platen presses such as this one. The light jobbing platen, credited primarily to George P. Gordon, was used for small items such as business cards, envelopes, and circulars. Printing was completed by the platen closing to meet the type bed, in a similar action to that of a hinge. Early presses were powered by foot-treadles, and steam power and then electric motors were eventually added for even greater speed. By the 1950s offset printing had become the primary printmaking method. Only Chandler & Price and Brandtjen and Kluge continued to manufacture open platen presses, with Chandler & Price ceasing production in 1964.
