Label TextFew things evoke psychoanalysis more than a couch like this. Dr. Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) began to use this style of couch in his medical practice in the late 19th century. Patients could recline in comfort as they shared whatever was on their mind. Today, psychiatrists invite patients to sit on chairs. This is better suited to the therapies that replaced Freudian psychoanalysis in the last third of the 20th century. It’s also better for building a trusting relationship between doctor and patient.
