Label TextLondon mayor, J. W. Little (1848-1913) distributed this medallion to local school children to commemorated Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1897. A prominent businessman, Colonel John William Little was London’s mayor from 1895 to 1897. Born and raised in Montreal, Little came to London in 1875 where he joined his uncle in a firm later called Robinson, Little. In 1885, he joined the Seventh Regiment, Canadian Fusiliers as a captain and by 1902 took command as Lieutenant-Colonel. In addition to his role in municipal politics and the local military establishment, Little was also vice-chair of the Western Fair and vice-chair of the Board of Governors of the University of Western Ontario. He also helped fund the university stadium, named in his honour, and completed in 1929.
