Label TextMembers of staff of the McClary Manufacturing Company gifted this model ship to Colonel W.M. Gartshore and his wife, Catherine McClary Gartshore, in 1886 on the couple's tenth wedding anniversary. This is an example of the paternalism that marked employee and employer relations in 19th century London and beyond. In this relationship, employers adopted a paternal attitude toward employees, caring for them as a “good” parent should. In turn, employees would sometimes demonstrate respect and affection for their employer/father figure with gestures such as this anniversary gift.
