Label TextLondon businessman Andrew Chisholm (1833-1872) purchased this clock in 1867 from John Moore & Sons of Clerkenwell, London, United Kingdom. Chisolm bought it to serve as London’s first town clock. He had it mounted on the front of his Fancy Dry Goods shop at what is now 142 Dundas Street but which was then 83 Dundas Street. Launching his business from at least the mid-1850s, Chisolm was one London’s first dry goods merchants. An advertisement in Railton’s 1856-57 Directory described Chisholm’s as “importers of staple and fancy dry goods, ready-made clothing, etc.., wholesale & retail…” The business sold a range of goods including, for women, shawls, caps, bonnets, ribbons, hosiery, and for men, tweeds, shirts, collars, ties, handkerchiefs, and more.
