Label TextLondon artist Paul Peel (1860-1892) owned this gold pocket watch, which dates from about 1880. By this time, pocket watches were widely available. They had traditionally been made by skilled craftsmen, which made them expensive. However, in the 1850s, the American Watch Co. introduced mechanized production. By 1900, tens of millions of these cheaper factory-made pocket watches had been sold.
