Label TextJohn H. Chapman operated a dry goods store in London. He worked for the James Eaton & Co. from 1871 to 1879, at which time he purchased his former employer's stock and entered into the business on his own. J. H. Chapman and Co. sold general dry goods such as dress goods, silks, satins, staple goods, collars, Iinens, and tweeds. It also had millinery, mantle, dressmaking and tailoring departments. In 1911, J. H. Chapman and Co. was one of five businesses destroyed in a massive fire. The fire was suspected to have begun in the rear of Chapman's business. He, as with other merchants affected by the fire, rebuilt.
