Label TextThis silver napkin ring belonged to donor Pauline Amy Crouch Grose's aunt on her mother's side, Violet Amy Houchin. Violet was born in 1888 and died in 1918, a year after Pauline's birth. The napkin ring originated in France around 1800, invented as a useful tool to allow individuals to identify their napkin between washes. The idea of the napkin ring spread quickly. They were made using many different materials: silver, bone, wood, glass, and later Bakelite.
