Napkin rings originated in France around 1800 as a practical item for the wealthy bourgeoisie to identify individual cloth napkins between weekly washes. This meant the same person could be assured the same napkin at every meal. They became popular in the Victorian era and were often made of silver or silver plate, personalized with initials, and given as gifts for christenings and weddings.
