Lionel Ridout settled in London in 1844 and ran a hardware firm. He married Louisa in 1846. Ridout later invested in real estate, which led to serious financial troubles. Like many who had invested in real estate with the arrive of the Great Western Railway in 1853, he suffered in the economic collapse that followed in 1857 as the bubble burst.
