Label TextThis pew once served parishioners of Church of England, an Anglican church on Highbury Avenue that was demolished in 1976. Pews have an interesting history. Although benches first made their appearance in churches in the 13th century, the 16th century Protestant Reformation led to the introduction of permanent pews. Sermons became the central part of Christian worship and so pews became a key piece of church furniture.
