Object number1962.059.001
Label TextThe donor's grandfather, Mr. John Landreth wore this dress and cape set as a child in 1868. At the time, toddler boys and girls were dressed nearly alike in short-waisted dresses with full skirts. The dresses were often plain solid colours, but were sometimes stitched with soutache braid, which was popular in adult fashions at the time. "Breeching" was the occasion when a boy was first dressed in breeches or trousers. This would typically occur at age five or six.
