Label TextThe doll house was built for Catharine Keziah McCormick by her maternal grandfather, James Gage Birely. It was modeled on the Gage home in Stoney Creek which Catharine often visited. Known as Battlefield House the home survived the War of 1812 during which it was briefly captured by the invading American forces and the Birelys imprisoned. Family tradition has it that one son, also named James, escaped and warned the British of the whereabouts of the American forces giving the British an advantage in the subsequent battle of Stoney Creek which took place on the property. Catharine's paternal grandfather George McCormick, who owned the McCormick biscuit and candy making firm, made many of the wooden pieces of furniture.
