Label TextMrs. Letitia Pickering Morgan (1829-1936) purchased this sewing machine in 1865. It was the first privately owned machine in London. Unmarried, Letitia Pickering worked as a dressmaker according to the census returns for 1861, 1871, and 1881. This machine made it possible for her to produce more garments. According the museum's records, Mrs. Morgan’s mother, Mary Pickering, disagreed with the purchase. She believed her daughter was depriving other women of the means of earning their living. Letitia Pickering married John Hughes Morgan in 1895.
