Label TextThree mounted police officers from the London Police Service pose in this circa 1910 image. These officers may have been participating in a ceremonial occasion. Even after the service acquired its first horse-drawn patrol wagon in 1889, most London police officers walked to their destinations. The service’s mobility increased with the addition of two bicycles in 1913 and a Studebaker car in 1915.
The London Police Service had been established in 1855. Although the community was not a hotbed of criminal activity but did have its share of wrongdoing. Police in the 19th and early 20th centuries encountered drunkenness, assault, prostitution, theft, vagrancy, and arson, among other crimes.
