Deck Stool from the Victoria, Riverboat Steamer

Date1881
Credit LineTransfer from the London and Middlesex Historical Society, 1958
Object number1958.001.221
Label TextPassengers on the steamer Victoria used this foldable stool as they cruised on the Thames River. After it capsized on May 24, 1881, killing almost 200 people, someone salvaged it as a memento of the tragedy. Did you know the stool’s design is centuries old? It hasn’t changed because it works. The X-frame makes the stool stable and ensures the canvas seat remains taut no matter the size of the person sitting on it. As well, it’s light and portable.
