Label TextA stereoscope is an optical tool that presents two slightly different images, one to each eye, to produce the effect of depth and three-dimensionality. This model was invented around 1860 by Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. and modified by Joseph L. Bates. This style of stereoscope (economical, handheld, wooden card holder) is known as the Holmes-Bates stereoscope. These instruments allowed people to view cards with drawings or photographs of faraway places, landmarks, as well as scenes of everyday life.
