Label TextVictorian Neo-Classical Style Adapted from a Grecian chair, the 'klismos,' illustrated on ancient vases, this side chair is but a sample of the many forms and patterns that were borrowed by Victorian designers from classical art and history. This chair reflects the middle-class taste of about 1840-1850. These classic lines still find their way into the dining rooms of the 20th century. Mahogany wood, with a modern pattern of velvet seat pad. This is a 19th century dining chair but the shape of its legs is reminiscent of something centuries older. With its front legs curving forward and its back legs curving backwards, it recalls an ancient Greek Klismos. Imitating design elements of this style of chair is a characteristic of Greek Revival or Neoclassical furniture.
