Label TextWorkers at the C. S. Hyman tannery, pictured below, used the leather calipers to measure the thickness of leather. Charles Smith Hyman (1854-1926) inherited the family tannery established in 1835 by his father, Ellis Walton Hyman (1813-1878). Like other local businesses, it prospered after the arrival of the British garrison in 1838.
