Label TextThis top hat is made from beaver fur. Fashionable Europeans’ demand for such accessories from the 17th through to the 19th century created the fur trade. At its peak, this trade saw 100,000 beaver skins exported to Europe each year. The beaver’s role in Canada’s development explains why it is the country’s official animal symbol today.
