Label TextWilliam Gorman and D. J. Dyson founded the Forest City Spice Mills in 1883, locating it in a building on Talbot Street. It first packaged coffee but added spices, baking powder, and flavouring extracts to its product line in 1885. In 1890, D. J. Dyson left the business and R. C. Eckert joined it. Renamed the Gorman, Eckert & Company, it continued to package and sell coffee, spices, and flavouring extracts. By 1900, the company had added ketchup, salad dressings, and mustard. Eckert & Company named their “Alexandra” brand of flavouring extracts in honour of Great Britain’s Queen Alexandra (1844-1925). She was the wife of King Edward VII who reigned from 1901 to 1910.
