Label TextMourning veils have historically been worn to show respect for the dead, as visual indicators of a person's grief, and a way to express sorrow. In the Victorian period, widows often wore the longest veils, and other relatives wore shorter ones. The length of the veil would shorten and the colour would lighten as the mourning period progressed. Jessie Marie Bucke wore this veil after the death of her husband, Dr. Richard Maurice Bucke.
