Label TextSomeone stripped the paint from this arrow-back chair. Look at the incised lines encircling the chair’s legs and you can see that it once had been painted yellow, red, and black. Makers of this style of chair often painted them to cover the fact they were made of different types of wood. Softer woods, such as pine, were used for the seats to make them easier to shape for comfort. Harder woods, like hickory or ash, made up the legs, stretcher, and backrests. These woods made chairs strong and durable.
