Label TextThis piece of souvenir china depicting London’s YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) building was produced for sale to tourists to the city. This and other examples of souvenir china illustrated some of London’s best points with the objective of spurring further growth. William Bowman (1820-1909) established London's Young Men's Christian Association in 1856, 12 years after the original YMCA was founded in London, England by Sir George Williams (1821-1905). The YMCA offered a four-fold program. It helped men, and later women in the YWCA, to develop the mental, physical, social, and spiritual character expected of a Christian citizen.
