Label TextWilliam Bowman (1820-1909) established London's Young Men's Christian Association in 1856, 12 years after the original YMCA was founded in London, England by Sir George Williams (1821-1905). The YMCA offered a four-fold program. It helped men, and later women in the YWCA, to develop the mental, physical, social, and spiritual character expected of a Christian citizen.
