Label TextThe London Soap Company opened about 1875. The Phillips family took over the business in 1911 and ran it until 1978. At that date, they sold the building to the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority because it was located within the floodplain. A fire destroyed the building in 1985. Today a large roller salvaged from the fire is on the site.
Pumice soap was among the many products the company produced. This package of pumice soap is packaged in cellophane. This material was patented by Swiss chemist Jacques E. Brandenberger in 1912. As these packages illustrate, cellophane accepts print. This not only allowed for brand name and product information to be applied but also another innovation: the Universal Product Code bar code, first introduced in the 1970s.
