Label TextLondon’s William Ward factory manufactured many brands of cigars, including Ward’s Sweepstakes. First opened in 1875, the business closed in 1952. London was home to more than 20 cigar manufacturing firms at the industry’s peak in 1910. They produced more than 80 million cigars a year to satisfy a robust market for cigars in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Less expensive to manufacture, cigars also became less expensive to purchase. No longer the preserve of the upper classes, men of more modest means picked up the habit. For many, cigar smoking suggested sophistication and conferred status and prestige
