Label TextHume Blake Cronyn (1865-1933), a member of the Queen’s Own Rifles, received this medal for participating in the 1885 Northwest Resistance. In this conflict 8,000 militia and regular soldiers engaged Louis Riel (1844-1885) and his Métis and Indigenous fighters. The Métis fought to protest Ottawa’s refusal to grant land tenure and political rights. The Cree and Assiniboine people fought because Ottawa had failed to follow through on treaty obligations. Riel’s forces lost at Batoche in May 1885.
