Label TextThis London sewer brick dates from around 1901. By that time, the city had more than 30 kilometres of sewers made of bricks like this one. They carried waste to a new sewage farm at the site of what is now the Greenway Pollution Control Centre. To keep pace with growth, the city built five new sewage treatment plants between 1916 and 1963.
