Label TextThe George Tiemann Company located at 63 Chatham Street, New York, manufactured this post-mortem surgical kit between the 1850s and 1860s. Kits like this were crucial tools for medical students in the 19th century since they learned human anatomy and more from conducting post-mortem examinations on cadavers. The kit includes a range of instruments including a chain hook, scissors, a blow pipe, a chisel, dissection forceps, a dissection hook, a saw, an amputation knife, a metal scalpel, and a suture needle. A note on the box indicates that this post-mortem surgical kit belonged to Dr. George Smale of Chatham, Ontario. Smale was born in Chatham-Kent in 1871, trained at the Detroit School of Medicine, and, as of 1910, was practicing medicine in Santa Barbara, California.
