Label TextMPP Harry M. Allen used these scissors to open the London bypass section of highway 401 on May 31, 1957. Before the 401, all traffic used the two-lane Highway 2. Congestion had become a problem in the many communities it passed through, including London. Construction of the 401 began in the mid-1940s and was completed in 1968. It made travel far easier for cars and transport trucks.
