Label TextThis is a 1956 portable Sony transistor radio. Transistors are semiconductor devices that amplify or switch electronic signals. They replaced vacuum tubes as amplifiers for audio signals in radios. As a result, radios became smaller, required less power, were more shock-resistant and did not need time to warm up. Transistor radios became all the rage because they allowed people to carry their entertainment with them wherever they went.
