Label TextJohn Labatt II won this gold medal at the 1890 Western Fair for the quality of his exhibition of ales and stouts. Labatt's and other local breweries were important participants at the Western Fair. The availability of beer at the event drew visitors. As well, their paid advertising in Western Fair promotional materials helped fund the annual event. Although temperance advocates argued against the availability of beer at the Fair, until the Ontario government formally implemented Prohibition in 1916, the brewers had a strong presence. As with other manufacturers, the Fair provided the Labatt brewery opportunity to promote its wares and build brand recognition.
After his father's death in 1866, John Labatt II (1838-1915) officially took over Labatt Brewing Company in 1872. The company would become the largest brewery in Canada. He began to enter the company’s products into Canadian and international competitions. Winning medal after medal, the company gained fame and sales grew.
