Label TextIn the 1830s, David and Jacob Kuntz came emigrated from the German Duchy of Nassau. At first coopers in the settlement of Doon, they later moved to Waterloo, which had some 200 residents. The brothers began brewing around the 1850s, moving locations in the community over the years. By 1865, their brewery was in full production using hops and barley the brothers grew themselves. They named it Kuntz Spring Brewery. The First World War (1914-1918), Prohibition, and a 1929 lawsuit loss began the decline of the Kuntz brewery. Beer baron E. P. Taylor bought the struggling firm in 1929 and incorporated it into his brewing empire. During the Depression, the name changed from Kuntz Breweries to Kuntz-Carling to Carling-Kuntz and finally, during the Second World War (1939-1945), to just Carling. The brewing site in Waterloo at King and William later operated under the O'Keefe and Labatt names.
