Label TextIn 1828, John Balkwill established the London Brewery. Balkwill produced 400 barrels of beer a year and sold much of it in his own tavern. Samuel Eccles purchased the operation from Balkwill and his brother-in-law, George Snell, in 1847. John Kinder Labatt, pictured here, at first Eccles’ partner, bought the brewery in 1853. He renamed it John Labatt’s Brewery.
Labatt’s produced XXX Stout, among other popular products, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1855, John Kinder Labatt (1803-1866), pictured below, took the helm of the London Brewery (est. 1828), calling it John Labatt’s Brewery. With the railway, the business expanded across Canada.
