Label TextThis plate features Canada’s first prime minister (1867-1873, 1878-1891), Sir John A. Macdonald. As one of Canada’s “founding fathers,” he enjoys symbolic status. Macdonald helped bring about the union of Upper and Lower Canada, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia into Canada on July 1, 1867. During his first term as prime minister, Manitoba, the Northwest Territories, British Columbia and Prince Edward island also joined Confederation.
