Label TextThis letter informed John Carling (1828-1911) of his royal appointment to be a Knight Commander. Carling was born in the Township of Middlesex in 1828. He joined his father in his brewery business and later succeeded him as president of the Carling Brewing and Malting Company. In addition to the family business, Carling pursued a career in politics. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada in 1858. He served in the House of Commons as a Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) from 1878-1891, during which he established the Ontario Agricultural College and the Central Experimental Farm and in 1878, established a water works for the city of London.
