Label TextDonor Jim Verwer explained: “Canadian Liquid Air has quite an interesting history in London. The plant was established there in 1916 and was also one of the first plants in Ontario and Canada to produce liquid oxygen as well as acetylene. Because of its close proximity to the CPR train shops - torn down now- it was an important manufacturer and supplier of acetylene and oxygen there for the oxy-acetylene cutting process that was invented at the turn of the century. ... The oxygen plant was decommissioned in the 1960s- the tall brick building directly across from Kelloggs was built to house the air separation tower. The acetylene plant operated till 1995 without an accident. It had some unique features including a line shaft driven externally to the building that ran the compressor. When the entire facility was totally demolished in 1995, including the offices on the site, the carbide by-product sludge pit was cleaned up and a new building and filling plant was built but acetylene was no longer produced there...."
